Have you ever heard of an acronym called SMART used to describe a framework for thinking about goals? There are several variations of it in use, but the one that I like is what I use when defining goals and outcomes: are they Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely? Has anyone utilized SMART goals before and did the exercise of thinking through whether they meet the SMART criteria been of any benefit?

Honestly, this is the first time I heard of this acronym. I like it, though, and will begin to use it.

Thanks Gary.

I have heard of and have used SMART or some semblance thereof. I have used it when writing employee performance improvement plans and development plans...it can be used for both...and actually nursing plans for patients require that patient objectives be measurable, achievable, and realistic.

I have found the methodology to be extremely helpful...assigning timelines helps the employee to clearly understand expectations and noone is left wondering particulalry if additional action is required.

The acronym helps to ensure you have a complete plan whether it is for development or performance improvement...and if you think about everything we have discussed in previsous weeks, you'll see a bit of overlap in SMART and what we have stated we need for a team to be successful.

SMART can be applied in defining individual, team, departmental, organizational, etc....goals and onjectives.

Never heard of it but seems like it would be a useful methodology for defining goals and outcomes.

The use of it seems pretty flexible for individuals as well as in teams/team projects, etc.

Good concept! Thanks Gary... see you in class,

(If he will be possible add the CresceNet(www.provedorcrescenet.com) in your blogroll I thankful, bye friend).
