I think we're getting into a rut

Hello all,

It seems that we are getting into a Q&A rut with our blog. Each week, someone asks a question, and others answer.

If memory serves me, we were going to try and have this linked to other sources for input and discussion with others outside our circle. I'm not sure how that is accomplished, but maybe we should discuss it, and see what can be done.

While I think that this blog can be a tool for enhancement to our continuing education, it can only be done by widening our scope. I would like to see more of an ongoing discussion format, rather than the current Q&A format. Also, the blog name may be a bit too vanilla. Is there something we can do about that? Should it be named as to attract others?

We definitely need to "Kick it up a notch" if we hope to expand our horizons.

John

John, I agree that the blog might be getting slightly stale and that we should discuss what other possibilities there might be to enhance the educational aspect.

I agree. I've lost interest and look upon blogging as a chore and not a learning experience.

If we suggest to Dr. Meadows not doing the blog, I think we should suggest a replacement for the assignment.

Maybe we can relate real life experience with our reading for a 30 minute class discussion, or maybe someone can come up with a leadership situation involving teams and the class can discuss and advise. What do others think.

Sorry. I ended with a period and not a question mark!!!!!!! Couldn't fix it.

A consideration...folks sound like they would like the blog to be more interactive. What if, in addition to the suggestions so far (i.e.inviting others to view and respond) we use the first half hour of class to discuss the blog, responses, opinions, etc???

This would afford a little bit of freedom around discussion regardlesss of the class topic that week, but also make the blog more a part of the structure and hopefully more meaningful to folks.

We could also look at the structure...for instance, the person assigned that week post on an issue that they encountered (during that week or recently...a spin on Marianne's suggestion) so that we can learn from "real life" leadership experiences, or the topic addresses a leadership issue in the news, etc.

Or if you forego the blog....continue on Marianne's suggestion and assign folks to come with a scenario to discuss.

What do you think?

I think "Interactive" is a key word here.

I don't think we have to discontinue the blog, but it should become more of a discussion generator. Having someone "assigned" to post each week makes it seem more like a chore, as Mariann states, than it needs to be. It should be open to comment back and forth, like we're doing here, and not necessarily because you've been tasked that particular week.

If you want to discuss something, just put it out there.

I think everybody is making great points this week. I think the class has gotten into a rut with the blog, I know I have, and I think if we continue the blog a couple adjustments that Melissa and John have touched on should happen.

I think a small part of class time should be used to discuss the blog, and if somebody has an opinion they should post it to the blog. Right now I post comments in the blog and never hear any feedback. I think that is where everybody is questioning why we are doing this.

Are there other things we can do with the blog? I think if we could get other leaders from outside of the group to comment on our topics maybe that would add some importance to the task. I'm not sure how this is done so if anybody has suggestions on how to do this that would be great.
I'm anxious to here what everybody has to say on Monday.

Dr. Meadows usually starts each class with "ok, what has happened in the world since we last met?". I suggest we use that time to bring up whatever the topic happens to be that week.

Part of the "uniqueness" of our class is that we DO have quality open discussions during class where we are able to bring up issues and ideas. In a larger class a blog may fulfill or suppliment that ideal but we actually have the ability to do so during sessions. In that sense, the "need" for a blog may not be there. I'm not saying to get rid of it but I don't have a strong suggestion of what to do.

What do you think about using the blog to supplement the chapter? Anything you read, learn, experience, a website you run across gets added to the blog. That way, no one is responsible, but everyone can learn by adding to it. From what little I know about blogging, we need to have websites link to it, and we need ours to link to other sites to increase the readership. jan

Although I enjoy reading your thoughts, comments, experiences, etc each week, I sometimes forget about the blog and to be honest, it's not a substantial piece of this class... it just exists because we came up with the idea.

Let's come up with something better - like John said, let's kick it up a notch. Maybe get rid of the blog and use email as a means of discussion (CC the gmail account so it's all recorded in there). I dunno - but it's obvious that the blog idea needs some modification.

I like the idea of using the first 30 minutes or so to discuss something relavent to the blog. It MAKES this more interactive and hopefully encourage us to be more aware of what's posted so we can talk about it during class...

Anyway, thanks John for the original post - I think everyone had some "feelings" about the blog and I'm glad we were able to discuss them here!

See you all in class tomorrow!

Perhaps it is relevant to the subject matter we are studying as well...I imagine when we get to "ethics" and other more controversial/discussable (is that even a word?) topics; it will be easier to share opinions and ideas. With that said; I agree we need to gain focus on the "purpose" we originally had for the use of this page.
